April showers bring...T-ball heartbreak

On Sunday, we went over to the going-away party for some friends of ours. Jeff Earl had been one of the first people we befriended when we moved to Monticello, and he seemed an almost permanent part of UAM and Monticello. Jeff's taken a new job in Texas, and will be leaving shortly. When we first arrived, there were some faculty, faculty kids, and grad students batting softballs around. Kenny was eager to join in, so they let him swing the bat at a few pitches. Kenny did remarkably well--he seemed better coordinated with a pitch than he does with the tee in T-ball.

Kenny actually faired better with batting than he did just goofing around with a ball after dinner--more on that later. Today, Kenny was all excited because it was his first day of T-ball. However, as is typical in the South, the humidity was up, and the atmosphere was not too stable. Hope and I watched the skies and the radar during this afternoon, and sure enough, about 4:30 p.m. the clouds opened up. Kenny's game wasn't until 5:30 p.m., so we thought that if it let up, we may still get to see him play... However, as we drove to the field, the rain kept pouring, the wind picked up, and the lightning flash--quite a spring storm! This is the scene we saw at the field he plays at:

Before long, his T-ball coach drove up and delivered the bad news to Kenny--the games were postponed until later. You can see from the look on his face that he was disappointed:

Oh, and the blemish under his eye in this picture--a nasty abrasion he got on Sunday when trying to use his baseball cap to catch a ball while playing later with some of his friends. Kenny's still too young to realize that weather cancellations are for his own good, and that of others. We weren't too disappointed, actually: the prospects of sitting in soggy bleachers watching him get muddy weren't great... Check out this picture of the "river" flowing into the field, which had several inches of standing water:

We tried to console him with the fact that they'll make this game up two Saturdays from now, and that will mean that his Nahma and Bumpa (Ann and Rick Pruden, Hope's parents) will be able to watch him play when they come down for a visit.

Yeah, in particular it reminds me of the picture from my first day of school, when little Donny couldn't go along too and shed some tears by a maple tree.

Poor Kenny!
