Fun February!


Well, nothing gives one the chance to get caught up on the ol' blog like nearly 6" of rain in the past 24 hours...  Above is a picture of Hope's annual 4-H banquet in Desha County to thank the parents, students, volunteers, and other contributors...After a hearty meal of BBQ and fried pies for dessert, she got down to the serious business of giving out awards.  Below, I receive the "Husband of the Year" award:


Just kidding...I was accepting an award on behalf of the Tunican Chapter of the Arkansas Archeological Society.  Kenny did receive a real award, though, for his winning the chicken cook-off Desha County 4-H had hosted earlier in the year:


Got a trophy and everything for his really well cooked chicken!


Kenny was also recognized for his prowess at bass clarinet, by being part of the regional band program.  In the picture below, you can kind of see the size of the instrument he has quickly mastered:


I had to take Kenny to this regional band performance, which meant that Hope was up for duty at Stephen's Pinewood Derby, which was held at about the same time as the band performance.  Stephen's vehicle was easy to spot:


Stephen was both a good winner, and a good sport, shaking the hand of one of his competitors below:


Later in the week we went to Stephen's Blue and Gold Banquet, for which Hope helped out:


Beth was a big help, too, by watching the toddler daughter of some friends of ours:


Kenny and I have spent several weekend days helping the Arkansas Archeological Survey look for a couple different Civil War battlefields in Arkansas.  Below, Kenny helps UAM station assistant archeologist Katy Gregory with a global positioning satellite unit:


Last weekend we took it off for ourselves (mostly), which was great, because it was a beautiful day.  We drove up to Petit Jean Mountain to see a couple archeology talks and to hike some of the trails.  Below is a view of one of the canyon overlooks:

She was in a lot better mood then than she is now (she just got a couple teeth pulled).  The Petit Jean trip was actually in March, not February, but at the rate this rain keeps falling, we may not have many pretty pictures from March!

"Husband of the Year Award"! You so funny! Really nice update. I can't wait to tell Mark about Kenny's cooking success. That is awesome. I am just dumbfounded at how much more grown-up all the kids look---even since I last saw them at Christmas! Really, they ALL do! Tell Stephen I like his car (I like that cool green color). Love that picture of Beth posing on the rocks.

Late fall activities

Well, I better get this blog post out before too long--hard to believe it is already December and the holiday season is upon us!  The picture above is from a visit earlier this fall by Beth--and her introduction to our new female tabby kitten "Charlie".  Charlie got her name from the neighbor boy who thought she was a he when this small stray kitten showed up in our neighborhood.  We believe someone dumped her when she was old enough to be on her own--she was definitely very friendly from the very beginning!  The neighbors "found" her first, but as they have cat allergies, were not going to take her in...Since our Bella had died earlier this year, we determined that we were going to wait until early 2024 to find a replacement cat...but as they say, you don't find cats, they find you...  So now we have Charlie! This has been a fairly conventional if very busy fall for us...Halloween came and went remarkably quick, with our traditional pumpkin carving (above) and ...

Happy 4th of July!

Nothing like starting off the 4th of July with a bit of a BANG!!! When we last left y'all, we were in the midst of the 2011 Arkansas Archeological Society's summer dig... The rest of the week, we continued digging, and continued to find neat things like this 1830s vintage silver US dime: Here's an interesting picture--the orangish color object is a brick--what is the white thing above it? (Hint: it's upside down...) It is the ceramic, painted head of a toy doll! Like many (most) archeological digs, some of the neatest items turn up at the very end, and this dig at Historic Washington was no different (the dime and doll's head were found on the last full day of the dig). We thoroughly enjoyed this year's dig, heat and all, and look forward to next year's excavations. Earlier this spring, Kenny was given a cabbage to plant, and though it didn't fare well in the heat and dryness we had, it did produce a decent little head that was pretty tasty chopp...

Kenny is now a Husky!!

Well, it's official!  We have a new MTU Husky in the household!  But more on that later...  This summer had a few rainbows: We also had an extended stay by a different kind of family--some birds nested in an old Packer helmet toy of the kids, and it appears that these 4 chicks were successfully raised by their hard working parents: (you can just barely see the beak of one of these nestlings in the picture above).  One other project we worked on was a new fireplace mantle for our living room...The one that had been there since we bought our house was showing its age and breaking down, so after some consideration and shopping around, we decided it would be best to build our own out of a number of oak boards...and we're pretty happy with the results: By now, summer 2020 has now largely wound down...After a brief delay to better prep for COVID, the Monticello school system is now open for classes, so Beth and Stephen have gone back to classes this past week.  The de...
