No, Stephen, don't touch that camera lens...!!!
Arggghhhhh!! No damage done--at least not as much as when we tipped the canoe and soaked the camera... I figured since it has been about a month since our last post, and I didn't want to get a reputation as a blog-slacker, I should update this before I go on a business trip to North Carolina this weekend...
We have been pretty busy this last month, between my work duties, our child-related duties (such as taking pictures of the younger kids while attending Kenny's baseball games, as seen in the picture above), and our other hobbies. Below is a picture of Stephen, who got to tag along with Hope and Beth to a field trip Beth's preschool class took to the nature center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas:
Below is a picture of Beth hamming it up with Stephen and some of her friends at one of the exhibits at the nature center:
I've been on several trips to Little Rock to help on that
archeological dig there. Below is a picture of part of a broken
celt (a wood working tool) that I found while surface collecting along a plowed field next to the dig. Note the pointed edge and smooth contours of this prehistoric tool--this had been ground smooth by rubbing it against other stones until the desired shape was achieved:
We also found a number of broken and discarded arrow points in recent weeks, including the specimen I unearthed below:
We dug a pretty deep pit over the course of several days to follow some artifact deposits. Below, Dr. John House of the Arkansas
Archeological Survey is measuring the soil layers to help better understand how these artifacts were deposited:
This pit was slightly deeper than Dr. House is tall--he's not a tall man, and it was a pretty good hole! We also made a couple trips to Little Rock for other reasons as well, including a visit to the zoo and a baseball game. Below is a picture of the kids with a spare--the blond-haired boy in the back with Kenny is his friend Peyton McBride:
Notice how Kenny's glancing off to the side--he and Peyton were playing with his portable video game player, and he couldn't bear to look away even for a picture! I was working at that dig site, but Hope took the kids shopping and to the zoo. Here the older kids are hamming it up at the zoo:
and here Peyton and Kenny are walking one of the trails at Toltec Mounds State Park near Little Rock:
You can see the large earthen Indian mounds in the distance of this picture that are the primary attraction of this state park. The Arkansas
Archeological Society's summer dig for this year will be held at this park, and I'm planning on spending a couple weeks here in June as a volunteer. After all that activity, Peyton decided it was time for a nap:
Isn't it amazing how kids can sleep, bent at all sorts of weird angles? If I slept like this, they'd have to put me into traction for a month!! The big event for the day was a trip to the minor league ballpark in North Little Rock for a Texas League game:
This ballpark was recently built, and is quite a nice facility. We got to the game early, and figured we'd eat at one of the restaurants there before the game started:
This evening's game happened to be a promotional one, and they gave out free jerseys to the kids (note they are now all wearing red shirts):
They game was not high scoring, but it was entertaining, and the weather was just fine (overcast, with a nice breeze, and not too hot). We only stayed for about half the game, as it was after 7 p.m. when it started, and we had a 1.5 hour drive to get home, so the kids had a late night, but a lot of fun.
Peyton stayed with us overnight so we didn't have to wake up his family when we returned. This week's big activity has been Beth's "graduation" from preschool. Here she is, walking down the aisle to "Pomp and Circumstance":
Below, the proud "grad" gets her certificate:
The woman standing next to Beth, and her teacher from last year, is Jamie McBride, Peyton's mother. Jamie's daughter Elisabeth is one of Beth's best friends, and the picture below shows both girls looking at a display of the graduates (Mrs. Shelly was Beth's teacher this year):
Beth also completed her
kindergarten testing, and did very well, so in a few short months, she'll start the next chapter in her education life! Kenny will be moving out of the elementary school into Monticello Intermediate School, which too will have a new set of challenges for him. Stephen will still be too young to start preschool, but he's getting close (first things first--we need to get him potty-trained!).
