We continue to get rainy, stormy, soggy weather here in south Arkansas. The
UAM weather station shows about 13 inches of rain so far in the 12 days of May we've experienced--an average of just over an inch per day! Today, we kept that pace going, with a strong storm that passed by just before supper time that dropped 1.2 inches of rain in one hour. They continue to forecast rain in the future--not that we need it! The picture above is taken from the boat landing on the highway between Monticello and Warren (a number of you have canoed this river with me, launching from this spot). Usually, there is probably between 15 and 20 feet between the surface of the river and the bottom of the bridge--now there is only two or three, and the river has yet to crest. The whole Saline River bottom is full of water, and it is now flooding the low ground above the traditional flood plain, as you can see in the picture below:
We took this picture tonight as we drove along the roads in the area--just a few weeks ago I was walking among these old post oaks taking increment cores (the water is probably 4-5 feet deep in places that were high and dry then).
Hope's parents came down for a visit late last week, and left yesterday (Monday) morning. Unfortunately, frequent heavy rain kept us from doing a number of our goals, including a bunch of fishing. We did manage some fishing time--above, Beth is trying her hand at fishing off of the boat launch (she didn't catch anything, and soon got bored). Below, Kenny, "

Ouachita River (Lake Jack Lee, if you're curious):
We didn't have great success fishing, but Rich did manage to catch a small
largemouth bass:
We also saw some cool areas on this lake. The water was high because of all the rain we had gotten in recent days, but being a reservoir, there were a lot of other flooded areas to explore, including a neat pocket of old-growth
baldcypress and
tupelo gum:
Kenny was willing to pass off his fishing lure as his "catch" for the day:
We hope the rain quits soon--Kenny has had several of his Little League games canceled because of the rain, including tonight's game (the second in a row). My lawn needs to be mowed, but it is too boggy to do so--we will probably have standing water in places for days after it quits raining. Oh, and for those of you who didn't see Hope's reply to the last blog posting, the wind storm that hit Monticello last week Wednesday was ruled to be an EF1 tornado by the National Weather Service. Yikes!!
