Lunker Larry's glad to see Uncle Bill's OK
We hadn't heard about the bridge collapse in Minneapolis until Dad called that same night with an unrelated computer question. We were glad to hear that Brother Bill, though having traveled across that bridge just hours earlier, was unscathed, and I don't think we had any other friends, family, or associates injured or killed in this terrible tragedy. The people of the Twin Cities will be tremendously inconvenienced until the bridge is rebuilt, but it could have been far worse.
This incident reminded Hope and I of the May 2002 collapse of the I-40 bridge in eastern Oklahoma. We were traveling back from a Memorial Day weekend vacation with friends in Biloxi, Mississippi, and were driving through western Mississippi on our way towards Greenville and the bridge that spans the Mississippi River there. We couldn't help but feel nervous--the old bridge crossing the Mississippi at Greenville is one of the most commonly struck bridges along the river... Needless to say, we crossed just fine, but it makes you think. They are also finished building a huge new bridge at Greenville, which I think is to open this fall. We look forward to crossing on this improved span.
Here are some ultrasounds of "Lunker Larry," as we're
now calling him--using the label "Lil' Larry" just doesn't seem appropriate anymore. Hope had this most recent ultrasound because of some false labor pains she's been having. After a thorough exam found both baby and Mom okay (with the exception of some high blood pressure with Hope), she was given some new medicine to ease her symptoms and told to take it easy. They can use the ultrasound to measure different parts of the baby, and thereby estimate weight at birth--looks like Larry will be pushing 10 pounds, at this rate! He's off the charts for his age (34+ weeks), and is probably over 8 pounds by now. Whew!! No wonder Hope's suffering so...
But do I get any sympathy? I just got new glasses, and they're still irritating the bridge of my nose until I get accustomed to them. Who feels my pain? ;)
