September activities
September has always been one of my favorites months of the year...Growing up in northern Wisconsin, September meant fall colors and cooler temperatures (not so much the case this year in Arkansas), as well as my birthday, the beginning of football season, etc. Twenty-three years ago, I also got another reason--Hope and I got married! Above is a picture of us celebrating this anniversary after an afternoon of shopping.
In our more recent life, September means the beginning of marching band season as well...Below, Hope, our friend Claire, and her daughter Eva enjoy the action before the band:
Actually, Monticello's high school football team is in the midst of a prolonged slump, so there hasn't been a lot of football action to enjoy:
Thank goodness Monticello has an excellent high school band! Not only do band parents help keep the football stands full (at least until the half time show), but we get quite a performance by sharply dressed musicians, such as Kenny playing his bass clarinet:
Beth opted to be in a stagecraft (theater) program at school this year, so she's not in band, but she still enjoys the related activities, such as 1980s dress-up day:
Beth, always our drama queen, also loves to pose, as she does with this hand-woven basket I recently won at a charity auction for the Arkansas Archeological Society:
And, of course, here's her glowing endorsement of two batches of hot pickled eggs I made this last weekend:
Kenny also had his Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony this past weekend. You may recall earlier this year he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a ceremony for the entire troop's achievements. The court of honor is his personal recognition by the troop and for the community. Below, Kenny and his beaming mom pose by some of the pictures and awards he received over the past decade plus:
Kenny's Eagle Scout project was based largely on the construction of this cedar "grotto" or structure built around a statue of Mary in the back of our church:
(he also did some related landscaping work). Below, Stephen and Kenny played Rick Pruden a game or two of chess while waiting for the program to start:
Rick traveled down for a quick weekend visit to watch Kenny march on Friday, and then joined the ceremony on Saturday. Below, Kenny delivered a few remarks and thanked those who helped him over the years:
Hard to believe how much Kenny's grown over the years; he will soon graduate from high school and roll on to college. Amazing!
