Back from vacation

We arrived back in Monticello late Monday (September 12) night following a largely enjoyable vacation. I say largely because of the lumps our beloved Packers took on Sunday, and that our van's air conditioner decided to act up, leaving us without cooling capacity for most of the trip south. If it were a typical fall up north, this wouldn't have been a problem, but our thermometer in the van read in the low 90s as we headed towards Madison, and it stayed warm the rest of the way to Arkansas. But the kids were great on this trip, and the heat was not as bad as it could have been, so we survived.

We had a great trip. Beautiful weather for our camping and canoeing in Sylvania, lots of friends and family were seen, and we finally got some uninterrupted relaxation time (no business on this trip for me!). We took a number of pictures, and I will post them to my Yahoo pictures link as soon as I download them from the camera. Kenny loved playing with his cousins Mike and Emma and his friends David, Coty, Kia, and Karissa. Beth really enjoyed getting to play in the grass and chasing dogs/cats. Hope and I had a great time tramping through the woods and enjoyed the touches of fall color this dry year has spurred. I also helped dad set up his own blog, and he has really taken a shine to this new means to deliver his newsletters. We got to see Bob's boat (and took a brief and choppy boat ride) at the marina in a beautiful little town near Green Bay called Algoma. We visited the new Lambeau Stadium and toured the facility. We also had a chance to visit with Laurie and Mark in Madison (twice), Lisa and her family in Eau Claire, and saw John a couple of times. In fact, the only one we didn't see was Bill :( , who is off cavorting in the south of France :) .

Also, you'll note that I have slightly changed how you can respond to our blog in order to avoid automated spam...sorry for the extra hassle, but both dad and Bill's blogs had this problem, and it can be really annoying!

Glad you made it. I see the fine mechanics of the northwoods failed you on your A/C...who would have guessed it! I bet if you look close you'll see some bubble gum stuck on a line as a patch! Anyway, Coty won the Wisconsin State Championship race in Wi Rapids that day, the trophy is huge! He had a great season, and this is just his FIRST! Cant wait till next BMX season. We will prolly go down to Elkhorn this winter and race one weekend on the indoor track.

Well, I better get this blog post out before too long--hard to believe it is already December and the holiday season is upon us!  The picture above is from a visit earlier this fall by Beth--and her introduction to our new female tabby kitten "Charlie".  Charlie got her name from the neighbor boy who thought she was a he when this small stray kitten showed up in our neighborhood.  We believe someone dumped her when she was old enough to be on her own--she was definitely very friendly from the very beginning!  The neighbors "found" her first, but as they have cat allergies, were not going to take her in...Since our Bella had died earlier this year, we determined that we were going to wait until early 2024 to find a replacement cat...but as they say, you don't find cats, they find you...  So now we have Charlie! A new fence, a load, and a birthday boy

Hope is standing next to the beginning of our latest (and now completed) project--the construction of a stretch of cedar fence along our backyard.  We decided to build this fence to give us some more privacy, and cedar pickets seemed cheap enough, so after constructing a wooden framework out of pressure treated pine lumber, we started putting up the pickets.  As you can see below, even Kenny pitched in: This wasn't a long stretch, only about 70 feet or so, and it went up quickly.  Below, you can see how it runs behind our shed: In addition to being pretty and smelling great, the cedar should be more decay resistant than untreated pine, and it provides a nice screen for the neighbors... We also went to a special fundraiser held every year for Arkansas Children's Hospital called "Log A Load For Kids".  This fundraiser is run largely by the timber industry, and all the proceeds are donated to the children's hospital in Little Rock.  Below are some...

June is for berry picking!

  Well, at least June is for berry picking in Arkansas!  We were able to do a bunch of picking of blueberries, blackberries, and peaches following the completion of the 2022 summer dig (see last Bragg Family South blog post on that...).  Since I had the new Juneteenth federal holiday off, I took Beth and Stephen to a pick-your-own place about an hour from where we live.  Their plants were just loaded with fresh goodies, such as the blueberries shown above...and I think I picked my biggest individual blueberry ever: This picture isn't photoshopped--that is really how big it was!  We also picked a bunch of large blackberries that this fruit farm offered: I'm not sure what point Beth was making in the picture above--perhaps she was just observing how abundant and large the blackberries were, and how easy it was to fill our buckets: It took us only a few minutes to get pounds of these berries...and we were equally successful in scoring a bunch of nicely ripe peaches...
